A Complete Guide to Add Addon Domain to Bluehost Account

Bluehost is an unlimited web hosting company, and when I say unlimited, it means you can install multiple websites on your Bluehost account. Though, when you buy a Bluehost account, you get one free domain, and to install more website, you need to buy the domain directly from Bluehost, or simply buy a domain from an alternative domain registrar like Godaddy, and point the name server to Bluehost.

In this guide, I will be sharing how you can utilize the Bluehost addon domain feature.

How to use Bluehost Addon domain feature:

In my scenario, I have a domain which is purchased from Godaddy, and I will be adding it as an addon domain to Bluehost. Once I’m done adding this new domain to Bluehost, I can easily install WordPress or any other platform using Bluehost using Mojo Marketplace, which is earlier known as Simple scripts.

On your earlier domain registrar:

The very first thing which you need to do is, point out your domain Name server to Bluehost name server. The process will be the same for any domain registrar. If you have purchased the domain from Namecheap, Godaddy or any domain registrar, simply login to your domain control panel, and look out for Name server field.

If you are not so technical, you can ask your domain support team to change your name servers to Bluehost Name server. Here are Name servers for Bluehost:

  • NS1.bluehost.com
  • NS2.bluehost.com

Once you have changed your domain name server to point to Bluehost, all you need to do is add your domain as an addon domain to Bluehost, which I will explain below.

  • Login to your Bluehost account
  • Click on Domains at the top, and click on assign.

After this process is easy, and I will explain a few important things below.

Simply type the domain name which you are planning to add as an addon domain to your Bluehost account.

As soon as you finish typing your domain name, Bluehost will automatically verify the ownership of your domain name, by checking Name server of the domain name. If your domain name is still not pointing to Bluehost Name Server, you will be given alternative ways to verify your domain ownership (Ex: Upload a sample file). This is useful when you are planning to migrate an existing Website to Bluehost, as this will minimize the downtime.

Addon Domain or Parked domain:

In step 3, you will be adding your domain as addon domain or parked domain. Addon domain is suggested when you are planning to start a new Website on your new domain. If you want your new domain to point to the primary website of your Bluehost account, you will be using the parked domain feature. Since our requirement is to host multiple websites, we will be using the addon domain feature.

In step 4, the Bluehost domain manager will automatically use your domain name to give a directory to the domain name. A typical structure is public_html/newdomain. To simplify your understanding:

  • Files related to your primary domain is directly under the public_html folder of your Bluehost account. (You can check this using cPanel file manager or any 3rd party FTP Tool)
  • When you add a new domain, a new directory is added under Public_html with the new domain name. This makes it easier for webmasters to manage your different domain files.

That’s it. Now you have successfully added a new domain to your Bluehost account. This way you can add unlimited domains, and host multiple websites on your hosting account. Here is a video tutorial which will explain the entire process of adding another domain to your Bluehost account:

  • Great tutorial. Currently I am hosting only one blog in my Bluehost account. Surely I'll follow your tips to add few more blogs. Thanks for the share.

  • When using AddOn domain(s), how do they interact with Wordpress? I have an existing domain with a web page on Wordpress. I have added an AddOn domain, but I am not seeing how to publish content to the AddOn.

    • @Mike
You need to first install WordPress on your add-on domain, and after that your can publish content like you normally do with any WordPress blog.

  • Hey Harsh,
nice post. i want to ask a bit more, my question may sound silly. Can we use adon domain in simple hosting plan or we need unlimited doain hosting plan ? i went to in.bluehost.com and saw a offer for unlimited domain hosting for 239/mo but dont know how to get it.
so can i buy a simple domain hosting plan and host multiple domain by adon domains?

  • this only works if you have registered through bluehost.com and not through the indian site which is in.bluehost.com. If you have registered through the indian site you will not have access to the my.bluehost.com control panel where you can click on hosting > assign. You have to do it manually through the cpanel/.

You got a tutorial for that Harsh?

  • Harsh,

Good work. I just talked to Bluehost chat support and they confused me a lot. What a crap they were not clear. The process is very simple. I followed your instruction which are very simple. I am also professional blogger and appreciate your effort. :)

    Anurag

  • Dear Harsh,

I have bought a domain with .in extension with GoDaddy and bought shared hosting with Bluehost.com. I received a free domain with Bluehost plan. I want to host another website with .xyz extension. By searching as usual from domains tab under Bluehost dashboard, it is showing the domain is available but with some charges of around $15.
Can you please guide how can I avail that one free domain I got with my hosting plan?

    Thanks
    Aman
